Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Colomba' and 'SOLHY016'
Summary: The lightsprout of SOLHY017' is ovoid to broad cylindrical while that of Colomba' is globose to ovoid. The base of the lightsprout of SOLHY017' has a medium proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration while that of Colomba' has a high proportion of blue in the anthocyanin colouration. The base of the lightsprout of SOLHY017' has pubescence ranging between a medium and medium to high density while the base of the lightsprout of Colomba' has sparse pubescence and that of SOLHY016' has absent or very sparse pubescence. The apex of the lightsprout of SOLHY017' has pubescence ranging between an absent or very sparse and a sparse to medium density while the apex of the lightsprout of Colomba' has pubescence ranging between medium and medium to dense and that of SOLHY016' has pubescence ranging between medium to dense and dense to very dense. Anthocyanin colouration extends half-way to three-quarters up the stem of SOLHY017' while it extends from the base to one quarter the way up the stem of SOLHY016'. The midrib on the upper side of the leaf of SOLHY017' has anthocyanin colouration ranging between a low and low to medium extent while the midrib of Colomba' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration and that of SOLHY017' has anthocyanin colouration ranging between an absent or very low and low extent. The plants of SOLHY017' have a high frequency of inflorescences while those of Colomba' have inflorescences ranging between a low to medium and medium frequency. The peduncle of SOLHY017' has a high extent of anthocyanin colouration while the peduncle of Colomba' has an absent or very low extent of anthocyanin colouration and that of SOLHY016' has anthocyanin colouration ranging between a low to medium and a medium extent. The inner side of the corolla of SOLHY017' has a very high extent of anthocyanin colouration while that of Colomba' has an absent or very low extent. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of SOLHY017' ranges between a strong and a strong to very strong intensity while that of Colomba' has an absent or very weak intensity. The anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of SOLHY017' has a medium proportion of blue while the anthocyanin colouration on the inner side of the corolla of Colomba' has an absent or very low proportion of blue and that of SOLHY016' has a high proportion of blue.

Origin & Breeding History: 'SOLHY017' (experimental designation 21HY5467) is a true hybrid potato originating from the cross between the female parent PL0229' and the male parent PL0055' conducted at the Agventure B.V. breeding station in Ressen, The Netherlands in 2021. Based on maturity, plant structure, tuber characteristics as well as disease resistance the resulting progeny was designated 21HY5467 in 2022. Hybrid seed production commenced in 2022.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'SOLHY017' were conducted in Sainte-Croix, Quebec during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. Seeds were germinated in a green house and after 4 weeks the plantlets were transferred to an outdoor canopy for 5 days for acclimatization. The plantlets were then transplanted in the field and irrigated daily for 2 weeks. The field trial consisted of 4 replicates with plots arranged in a RCB Design. Each plot was a 5-metre-long hilled row containing 25 plants spaced 20 cm apart. Rows were spaced 0.915 metres apart. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 20 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 3 months after storage at 4 degrees Celsius.
