Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'Chieftain'
Summary: The lightsprout of Red Carré' is medium in size and globose with long lateral shoots while that of Chieftain' is small and conic with short lateral shoots. The base of the lightsprout of Red Carré' has very sparse to sparse pubescence while that of Chieftain' has medium to dense pubescence. The apex of the lightsprout of Red Carré' has an intermediate habit and a medium to strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of Chieftain' has a closed habit and a weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of Red Carré' have many inflorescences and mature late in the season while those of Chieftain' have few to a medium number of inflorescences and mature mid-season. The peduncle of Red Carré' has a medium extent of anthocyanin colouration while that of Chieftain' has an absent or very low to low extent of anthocyanin colouration. The corolla of Red Carré' has a high extent of medium to strong intensity anthocyanin colouration while that of Chieftain' has a low extent of weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The tuber of Red Carré' has a long-oval form and very shallow depth of eyes while that of Chieftain' has a short-oval form and shallow depth of eyes.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Red Carré' (experimental designation AG 1540) originated from the cross between Chieftain' and 'Patagonia', conducted at the Progest 2001 Inc, breeding station in Sainte-Croix, Quebec, Canada in 2014. One of the resulting progeny was designated AG 1540 in 2018 based on tuber shape, skin colour, and the overall appearance.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Red Carré' was conducted in Sainte-Croix, Quebec during the 2024 growing season. The field trial consisted of 4 replicates with plots arranged in a RCB design. Each plot was a 5-metre-long hilled row containing 25 plants spaced 20 cm apart. Rows were spaced 0.915 metres apart. Lightsprout characteristics were assessed on 10 tubers harvested from the comparative trial and observed approximately 2.5 to 3 months after storage at 4 degrees.
