Varieties used for comparison: 'Maravilla' and 'Heritage'

Summary: The current season's canes of 'DrisRaspThree' are shorter than those of both reference varieties. The intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the current season's cane is weak for 'DrisRaspThree' whereas it is strong for the reference varieties. On the current season's cane, the spines of 'DrispRaspThree' are small to medium at the base and short to medium in length whereas those of 'Maravilla' are very small at the base and very short. The leaf of 'DrisRaspThree' is light green whereas the leaf of 'Maravilla' is medium to dark green and 'Heritage' is medium green. 'DrisRaspThree' has medium to many spines on the pedicel whereas 'Maravilla' has few. The peduncle of 'DrisRaspThree' has a very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of 'Heritage' is strong. The length to width ratio of the fruit of 'DrisRaspThree' is small to medium whereas it is very small for both reference varieties. On the current season's cane, flowering and fruit ripening begin late in the season for 'DrisRaspThree' where as they begin mid-season for 'Heritage'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'DrisRaspThree' arose from a controlled cross between proprietary lines 'X146.7' (female parent) and 'S858.1' (male parent). Breeding was conducted in Santa Cruz, California in April 2002. 'DrisRaspThree' was selected from the seedling population in October 2003. 'DrisRaspThree' was asexually propagated in Santa Cruz, California and underwent propagation and continued testing for four years. Selection criteria included yield, flavour, and vigour.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'DrisRaspThree' were conducted in Chilliwack, British Columbia during the 2014 growing season. The plots were planted in the spring of 2013 in a randomized complete block design (RCBD). Each variety consisted of 3 replicates with 5 plants per replicate for a total of 15 plants of each variety. Plants were spaced approximately 61 centimetres apart within rows and 3 metres between rows.
