Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Drisraspfive', 'BT Rasone' and ‘Rubinia SO'

Summary: The spines of ‘Kokanee' are long and greenish brown while those of ‘Drisraspfive' and ‘BT Rasone' are medium length and brownish purple and those of ‘Rubinia SO' are short to medium length and purple. The spines of ‘Kokanee' are dense to very dense while those of ‘Rubinia SO' are sparse. The plants of ‘Kokanee' bear fruit on previous season's cane in summer and on current season's cane in autumn while those of ‘Drisraspfive' and ‘BT Rasone' bear fruit only on current season's cane in autumn.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, few to medium number of current season canes

VERY YOUNG SHOOT: weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration of apex during rapid growth, mid-season emergence
FRUITING LATERAL: semi-erect attitude, medium to long length
CURRENT SEASON'S CANE: medium to strong degree of bloom, strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, short to medium length of internode, short to medium length of vegetative bud
DORMANT CANE: medium to long length, purplish brown
SPINES: dense to very dense, small to medium size, long, greenish brown

LEAF: medium to dark green upper side, predominantly five leaflets, strong rugosity, relative position of lateral leaflets is touching
LEAFLET: straight in cross-section
TERMINAL LEAFLET: medium to long length, broad

FLOWERING: begins mid-season on previous season's cane, begins mid-season on current season's cane
PEDUNCLE: absent anthocyanin colouration

Origin & Breeding History: 'Kokanee' originated from a cross between the varieties 'ORUS 1173-2' (female parent) and 'Vintage' (male parent) in Corvallis, Oregon in September 2009. 'Kokanee' was selected in 2009 based on fruit firmness, fruit shape, and time of ripening. 'Kokanee' has been asexually propagated by root cuttings in Corvallis, Oregon from 2009 to present.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘Kokanee' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2020/2890, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office, in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the Bundessortenamt, in Prufstelle Wurzen, Germany, from 2023 to 2024.
