Summary: The plants of ‘Bonnie Lewis' have brownish green spines whereas the plants of ‘Atena' have purplish brown spines.

Description:

PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, medium to many current season's canes, bears fruit on previous season's cane in summer and on current season's cane in autumn, late vegetative bud burst

VERY YOUNG SHOOT: late emergence, weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration of apex during rapid growth
CURRENT SEASON`S CANE: medium length, very weak to weak bloom, strong to very strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration, short internode, short to medium length of vegetative bud
DORMANT CANE: medium length, purplish brown
SPINES: sparse, medium size, medium length, brownish green
FRUITING LATERAL ON PREVIOUS SEASON'S CANE: medium to long, semi-erect attitude

LEAF: medium to dark green upper side, predominantly three leaflets, medium rugosity, relative position of lateral leaflets is free

Origin & Breeding History: ‘Bonnie Lewis' (experimental designation 1249L-2) originated from a cross conducted between proprietary parents ‘0669B-1' and ‘0994H-12' at the James Hutton Institute, Dundee, United Kingdom in 2012. The new variety ‘Bonnie Lewis' was selected in 2016 in Dundee, United Kingdom, based on cane and fruit characteristics. Asexual reproduction by root cuttings was initiated at the James Hutton Institute in 2016.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Bonnie Lewis' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 20192568, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted at the Bundessortenamt in Wurzen, Germany from 2021 to 2022.
