Origin & Breeding History: 'Rax Artemis' originated from a cross made in March 2004 at Ayaengei Co., Ltd. in Miyazaki, Japan between an unspecified Ranunculus cortusifolius variety, as the female parent, and Ranunculus asiaticus variety 'Shaun Red', as the male parent. From October 2004 to March 2005, resulting seeds were cultured and a specific orange-coloured line was selected based on flower size, stalk straightness, number of gathered flowers and growth rate. A secondary selection was made from October 2005 and March 2006 based on the same criteria. From October 2006 to March 2007, the lines selected in the secondary selection (3 strains per each selected line) were cultured and specific lines were selected based on the same criteria. From October 2007 to March 2008, the lines selected in the tertiary selection (7 strains per each selected line) were cultured, their properties confirmed and they were named 'Rax Minoan'. An apical meristem culture of 'Rax Minoan' was started in November 2008. From October 2009 to March 2010, 500 seedlings of 'Rax Minoan' were cultured, raised and bud mutated after which one strain with yellow flowers was selected. This selected strain was raised, its properties confirmed and it was named 'Rax Artemis'.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Rax Artemis' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 29973, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Japan. The trials were conducted by the Center for Seeds and Seedlings at the Nishinihon Station in Ibaraki, Japan from 2016 to 2017. The colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
