Summary: The plants of 'RNI-RCC3' are taller than those of 'Forest Pansy'. The mature leaves of 'RNI-RCC3' are larger than those of 'Forest Pansy'. The plants of 'RNI-RCC3' have more flowers per node than those of 'Forest Pansy'.
Description:
TREE: medium vigour, upright habit
TRUNK: dark brown (closest to RHS 200A), grey brown (RHS 199C) lenticels, number of lenticels ranging from many to very many
SHOOT: red brown
YOUNG LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): dark brown (closest to RHS 187A and 166A), strong anthocyanin colouration
MATURE LEAF BLADE: no lobes, weak glossiness of upper side, weak anthocyanin colouration on upper side, cordate shape, cuspidate apex, cordate base, dark brown green (closest to RHS 148A) with medium brown (RHS 166B) on upper side in spring, dark brown green (closest to RHS NN137A) on upper side in summer
PETIOLE: strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FLOWERING: very early
FLOWER BUD: dark purple (closest to 72A)
FLOWER: upper petal medium violet (closest to but lighter than RHS N74D) with light blue pink (closest to 69D) at margin, lower petal medium violet (RHS N74D)
Origin & Breeding History: 'RNI-RCC3' originated from an open pollinated cross between two unknown parents conducted in the summer of 2015 in Wisconsin, USA. The new variety 'RNI-RCC3' was selected in McMinnville, Oregon, USA on May 5, 2017 based on plant habit, plant vigour and foliage colour. Asexual reproduction by budding was initiated in McMinnville in August of 2018.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'RNI-RCC3' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring/summer of 2023 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings, transplanted into 11 litre containers in the spring of 2023. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of 10 plants of each variety on August 18, 2023. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
