Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'MICROHIRS 3'

Summary: The inflorescence shape of ‘MICROHIRS9' is conical whereas it is strongly domed for ‘MICROHIRS 3'. The middle of the inner side of the corolla lobe is white for ‘MICROHIRS9' whereas it is medium blue pink for ‘MICROHIRS 3'.

Description:

PLANT: evergreen type, medium bushy growth habit, begins flowering late

YOUNG LEAF (UPPER SIDE): absent or very weak bloom, absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
MATURE LEAF: upper side medium green and weak glossiness, lower side light green, very short, very narrow, elliptic shaped, concave in cross-section

INFLORESCENCE: many flowers, conical shape
PEDICEL: short to medium length, yellow green on sunny side
CALYX LOBES: very short
FLOWER: tubular funnel shape, very narrow, single type, absent or very weak fragrance
COROLLA LOBE: absent or very weak undulation of margin
COROLLA LOBE (INNER SIDE): white (RHS N155C) to medium blue pink (RHS 67D), white (RHS N155C) middle
COROLLA LOBE (OUTER SIDE): medium blue pink (RHS 67D) middle
MARKINGS ON COROLLA THROAT: absent or very weak conspicuousness
ANTHER: yellow
PISTIL: equal length in comparison with stamens, white stigma

Origin & Breeding History: ‘MICROHIRS9' originated from a controlled cross conducted in 1997 in Ahrendsburg, Germany between an unknown Rhododendron hirsutum female parent variety and an unknown Rhododendron micranthum male parent variety. A new variety was selected from the resulting progeny in 2016 based on lime tolerance. Asexual reproduction of ‘MICROHIRS9' was first conducted by cuttings in 2016 in Apen, Germany.

Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘MICROHIRS9' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, reference number 2017/0755, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Bremen, Germany in 2018. Colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
