Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Noatraum' and 'Noamel'

Summary: 'Noala' has smaller leaves than the reference varieties. 'Noala' has shorter sepals than the reference varieties and weaker sepal extensions than 'Noatraum'. 'Noala' has single flowers while the reference varieties have double flowers. 'Noala' has medium pink flower colour while 'Noatraum' has deep pink flowers and 'Noamel' has light pink flowers. 'Noala' has smaller petal spots at the base of the inner and outer side of the petal than the reference varieties. The stigma is positioned below the anthers for 'Noala' while it is above the anthers for the reference varieties.

Description:

'Noala' is a compact bedding rose. The stem has thorns present, which are concave in shape, and a sparse number of short and long prickles. The thorns and prickles are green brown in colour. The leaves are medium green in colour with strong glossiness. There are five to seven leaflets. The terminal leaflet has a serrate margin and a leathery texture. The base of the terminal leaflet is rounded in shape.

'Noala' flowers mid-season and almost continuously for more than ten weeks. There are a very high number of flowers per shoot. The flower pedicel has a few hairs or prickles. The flower bud is pointed in shape and there are absent or very weak sepal extensions. The flower shape when viewed from above is irregularly rounded and flat on the upper and lower part when viewed from the side. The flower centre is normal. The corolla is single and medium pink in colour. The upper and lower side of the petal has a very small spot on the base. The petal margin has weak reflexing and undulation. The outer stamen has a yellow filament. The style is medium in length, yellow in colour and has no hairs on the upper half. The stigma is positioned below the anthers. The receptacle is small in size, pitcher shaped and has no prickles. The flower of 'Noala' has a weak, tea fragrance. 'Noala' is moderately resistant to mildew and resistant to black spot.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Noala' originated from the controlled pollination between Red Summer Rose and 'Repandia'. The breeding work was done in Gütersloh, Germany in 1991. Selection criteria included outstanding colour, disease resistance, petal form, self cleaning ability, duration of the flowers and flower colour and fragrance.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Noala' were conducted in the summer of 2002 at Pan American Nursery Products Inc. in Surrey, British Columbia. The trials consisted of six plants per variety grown outdoors in 20 cm pots.
