Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Ausromeo' and 'Ausmove' (Tess of the d'Urbervilles)

Summary: 'Ausverse' is an English shrub rose which differs from the reference variety 'Ausmove' in flower colour. The flowers of 'Ausverse' are a darker red colour than those of 'Ausmove'. The petals of 'Ausverse' have a yellowish white spot at the base, whereas 'Ausromeo' and 'Ausmove' have bright yellow basal petal spots. The flowers of 'Ausmove' are nodding in attitude, compared with 'Ausverse' which has straighter pedicels and therefore more erect flowers.

Description:

'Ausverse' is an English shrub rose variety with an upright to bushy growth habit. The young shoot has strong anthocyanin colouration which is purple in colour. 'Ausverse' has concave to flat shaped, reddish brown thorns. Short prickles are sparse on the stem and there is an average number of long prickles on the stem. The leaves of 'Ausverse' are medium green with moderate glossiness. There are 5 leaflets. The leaflets are leathery in texture and the terminal leaflet has an obtuse shaped base.

'Ausverse' begins flowering mid-season and flowers almost continuously for more than 10 weeks. The variety produces a low to medium number of flowers per shoot. The density of prickles on the pedicel is moderate. The flower bud is globular in longitudinal section and a dark red-purple colour before opening. Sepal extensions are medium. When viewed from above the flower is round. When viewed from the side the upper part is flat and the lower part is a flattened convex. 'Ausverse' flowers are dark red and very double. The petals have a medium sized, yellowish white spot at the base of the inner and outer surface. Reflexing and undulation of the petal margin is absent to weak.

The filament of the outer stamens of 'Ausverse' is yellow. The style is yellow-green, short and the upper half is densely hairy. The stigma is at the same level as the anthers. 'Ausverse' has a medium sized, funnel shaped receptacle with no prickles.

'Ausverse' has a strong, old rose fragrance. It is resistant to mildew, rust and black spot.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Ausverse' originated from a cross between two unnamed seedlings which took place at David Austin Roses, Albrighton, England in 1990. The variety was selected for its large, dark red, fragrant blooms, its resistance to diseases and strong upright and bushy growth.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Ausverse' were conducted at Valderose Gardens, Pain Court, Ontario during the summer of 2001. The trials consisted of 10 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on a minimum of 10 measurements.
