Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Poulnoev' (Salmo) and 'Poulharmu' (Manhattan)

Summary: 'Poulshrimp' has stronger intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the young shoots than either reference variety. 'Poulshrimp' has more short prickles on the stems and more prickles on the pedicel than both reference varieties. 'Poulshrimp' has narrower leaves than 'Poulnoev' and larger flowers with longer petals than 'Poulharmu'. When viewed from the side, the shape of the lower part of the flower is concave for 'Poulshrimp' while it is flat for 'Poulnoev' and convex for 'Poulharmu'. 'Poulshrimp' has more petals per flower than both reference varieties. The petals of 'Poulshrimp' have stronger reflexing at the margin than those of 'Poulharmu'. The colour of the outer side of the flower bud is red pink for 'Poulshrimp' while it is light red pink with a yellow base for 'Poulnoev' and dark pink red for 'Poulharmu'.

Description:

'Poulshrimp' is a container grown rose variety. The young shoots have moderate to strong, reddish brown anthocyanin colouration. The stems have an average number to many short prickles which are red brown and linear to concave in shape. The leaves are medium green and have weak to moderate glossiness on the upper side. There are three to seven leaflets per leaf. The terminal leaflet has a serrated margin and obtuse shaped base. The texture of the terminal leaflet is thin and flexible.

'Poulshrimp' has a medium to high number of flowers per flowering shoot. The flower pedicel has an average number of hairs and numerous, very small prickles. The flower bud is ovoid in shape when viewed in longitudinal section. The colour of the flower bud (¼ open) is red on the inner side and red pink on the outer side. The sepals have medium sepal extensions.

The flower type for 'Poulshrimp' is very full (40 plus petals per flower). The shape of the fully opened flower when viewed from above is round. When viewed from the side, the upper part is flattened convex and the lower part is concave. The fully opened flower is red pink changing to dark red pink to white as it matures. The petals have a small, yellow petal spot at the base on the inner and outer sides. The petal margins have strong reflexing. The filaments of the outer stamens are yellow green. The style is yellow green with a red apex and long. There is no pubescence on the upper half of the style. The stigma is positioned above the anthers. The receptacle is very small and funnel shaped with no prickles on the outer surface. 'Poulshrimp' has a strong fragrance.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Poulshrimp' originated from a cross conducted in June of 1990 between an unnamed seedling and variety 'Poulege'. The resulting seeds were planted in December of 1990 and germinated during the winter and early spring. The cross and selection took place in the greenhouses of Poulsen Roser A/S located in Fredensborg, Denmark. 'Poulshrimp' was selected in the spring of 1991 based on the objective of this hybridization which was to create a new and distinct rose variety for use in the garden. Selection criteria included uniform and abundant orange red flowers, vigorous but compact growth and disease resistance.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Poulshrimp' was conducted during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. There were 8 plants per variety. Bare-root roses were field planted in July of 2004 with the exception of 'Poulharmu' which was field planted in the early spring of 2002. The rose plants were spaced 60 cm apart with a 90 cm row spacing. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
