Description:

'Poulstri' is a climbing rose variety. The young shoots have moderate, red anthocyanin colouration. The stems have an average number of long prickles which are yellow and concave in shape. The leaves are dark green and have strong glossiness on the upper side. There are five to seven leaflets per leaf. The terminal leaflet has a serrated margin and round shaped base. The texture of the terminal leaflet is thin and flexible.

'Poulstri' flowers almost continuously and has an average number of flowers per flowering shoot. The flower pedicel has few hairs. The flower bud is ovoid in shape when viewed in longitudinal section. The colour of the flower bud (¼ open) is red with purple tones on the inner side and dark pink red on the outer side. The sepals have weak sepal extensions.

The flower type for 'Poulstri' is very double (30-39 petals per flower). The shape of the fully opened flower when viewed from above is irregularly rounded. When viewed from the side, the upper part is flattened convex and the lower part is concave to flat. The fully opened flower is purple red and white. The petals have a medium to large, white petal spot at the base on both the inner and outer sides. The petal margins have weak to moderate reflexing and weak undulation. The filaments of the outer stamens are yellow. The style is light green and long. Pubescence on the upper half of the style is very sparse. The stigma is positioned at the same level to slightly above the anthers. The receptacle is small and pitcher shaped with no prickles on the outer surface. 'Poulstri' has a medium strength fragrance.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Poulstri' originated from a cross conducted in the spring of 1992 between an unnamed seedling and variety 'Poulskov'. The resulting seeds were planted in December of 1992 and germinated during the winter and early spring. The cross and selection took place in the greenhouses of Poulsen Roser A/S located in Fredensborg, Denmark. 'Poulstri' was selected in the spring of 1993 based on the objective of this hybridization which was to create a new and distinct rose variety for use in the garden. Selection criteria included uniform and abundant pink/red flowers streaked with white appearing on the plant evenly from the lower to upper branches, vigorous but compact and low growth when propagated both as a budded rose and on its own roots, disease resistance and climbing plant growth habit.

Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Poulstri' was conducted during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. There were 8 plants per variety. Bare-root roses were field planted in July of 2004. The rose plants were spaced 60 cm apart with a 90 cm row spacing. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
