Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'White Dawn' and 'Poulbota' (Bolero)
Summary: 'Poulslas' has smaller leaves and smaller terminal leaflets than 'Poulbota'. The colour of the flower bud is white and yellow green on the inner side, and white and light blue pink on the outer side for 'Poulslas' while it is white on both the inner and outer sides for 'White Dawn' and light yellow with orange pink to light red pink margin on both the inner and outer sides for 'Poulbota'. 'Poulslas' has a smaller flower diameter than both reference varieties and smaller petals than 'White Dawn'. The colour of the style is green-pink for 'Poulslas' while it is yellow for 'White Dawn' and red for 'Poulbota'.
Description:
'Poulslas' is a climbing rose variety. The young shoots have weak to moderate, reddish brown anthocyanin colouration. The stems have an average number of short and long prickles which are mostly yellow and concave in shape. The leaves are medium green and have moderate glossiness on the upper side. There are five to seven leaflets per leaf. The terminal leaflet has a serrated margin and obtuse shaped base. The texture of the terminal leaflet is thin and flexible.
'Poulslas' has an average number of flowers per flowering shoot. The flower pedicel has few hairs. The flower bud is ovoid in shape when viewed in longitudinal section. The colour of the flower bud (¼ open) is yellow green and white on the inner side and light blue pink and white on the outer side. The sepals have weak sepal extensions.
The flower type for 'Poulslas' is very double (30-39 petals per flower). The shape of the fully opened flower when viewed from above is irregularly rounded. When viewed from the side, the upper and lower parts are flattened convex. The fully opened flower is white. The petals have no petal spots at the base on either the inner or outer sides. The petal margins have moderate reflexing. The filaments of the outer stamens are yellow green. The style is green to pink and medium in length. There is no pubescence on the upper half of the style. The stigma is positioned below the anthers. The receptacle is small and pitcher shaped with no prickles on the outer surface. 'Poulslas' has a strong fragrance.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Poulslas' originated from a cross conducted in the summer of 1991 between an unnamed seedling and variety 'Bonica 82'. The resulting seeds were planted in December of 1991 and germinated during the winter and early spring. The cross and selection took place in the greenhouses of Poulsen Roser A/S located in Fredensborg, Denmark. 'Poulslas' was selected in the spring of 1992 based on the objective of this hybridization which was to create a new and distinct rose variety for commercial glasshouse and nursery culture. Selection criteria included uniform and abundant flowers, vigorous but compact growth when propagated both as a budded rose and on its own roots, reduced apical dominance in flowering habit and superior disease resistance.
Tests & Trials: The test and trial for 'Poulslas' was conducted during the summer of 2005 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. There were 8 plants per variety. Bare-root roses were field planted in July of 2004 with the exception of 'Poulbota' which was field planted in the early spring of 2002. The rose plants were spaced 60 cm apart with a 90 cm row spacing. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart and measured characteristics were based on ten measurements.
