Variety used for comparison: 'Poulnorm' (That's Jazz)

Summary: The plant growth habit of 'Poulcy019' is intermediate between semi-upright and moderately spreading whereas the growth habit of 'Poulnorm' is upright to semi-upright. The leaf of 'Poulcy019' is smaller with medium to strong glossiness of the upper side whereas the leaf of 'Poulnorm' has weak to medium degree of glossiness of the upper side. The flower of 'Poulcy019' is smaller in diameter with fewer and smaller petals than the flower of 'Poulnorm'. The petals of a flower of 'Poulcy019' are of medium density whereas the petals of a flower of 'Poulnorm' are dense.

LATERAL FLOWERING SHOOT: few, many flowers

FLOWER BUD: elliptic shape in longitudinal section, dark purple red (closest to RHS 53A)
FLOWER: semi-double to double type, dark red colour group, medium density of petals, round shape when viewed from above, upper part is flat when viewed from the side, lower part is convex when viewed from the side, medium intensity of fragrance
PETAL: reflexing one-by-one as flower opens, obovate shape, weak incisions at apex, weak reflexing of margin, weak undulation, one colour on inner side, intensity of colour of inner side is uniform, inner side is dark purple red (closest to RHS 53A-B) fading with age to purple (closest to RHS 61A), small and white basal spot on inner side, colour of outer side is not clearly different from colour of inner side
OUTER STAMEN: filament predominantly light yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'Poulcy019' originated from a controlled cross conducted during the summer of 2001 at the breeding facilities of Poulsen Roser A/S in Fredensborg, Denmark, as part of a breeding program to hybridize rose varieties for commercial glasshouse and nursery culture. The cross involved two unnamed seedlings. The resultant seeds were planted in December 2001 and germinated during the winter and early spring. In the spring of 2003, one seedling was selected for its compact and vigorous growth when propagated on its own root, profusion of red flowers, suitability to open air nursery container culture, resistance to typical rose diseases, and as a climbing type rose with reduced apical dominance.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Poulcy019' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial consisted of a total of 8 plants of the candidate variety and 6 plants of the reference variety. All plants were grown from bare-rooted plants and transplanted into 13 litre containers on April 4, 2014. Unless otherwise indicated, observations and measurements were taken from 8 plants of the candidate variety and 6 plant of the reference variety, or 10 parts of plants of each variety on June 20, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
