It originated from a controlled cross conducted in June 2000 between the variety 'Horcoherent' as the female parent and 'Chewpatel' as the male parent. 'Chewhocan' was selected in 2005 based on growth habit, disease resistance, glossy foliage, free flowering habit, number of flowers, abundant and attractive flowers, and flower colour. Asexual reproduction of 'Chewhocan' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in 2005 in Newport, Shropshire, United Kingdom.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Chewhocan' was conducted outdoors during the summer of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 10 plants each of the candidate and reference varieties. All plants were grown from liners transplanted into 9 litre pots in July of 2013. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on July 21, 2014.
