Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Horcoherent' (Oso Easy Peachy Cream)

Summary: The young shoot of 'HORCOGJIL' has no anthocyanin colouration whereas anthocyanin colouration is present on the shoot of 'Horcoherent'. The prickles on the stem of 'HORCOGJIL' are mostly greenish yellow while those on the stem of 'Horcoherent' are reddish. The leaf of 'HORCOGJIL' is larger than that of 'Horcoherent'. The upper side of the leaf of 'HORCOGJIL' is dark green with no anthocyanin colouration while the leaf of 'Horcoherent' is medium green with anthocyanin colouration present on the rachis only. The flower of 'HORCOGJIL' is larger in diameter than that of 'Horcoherent'. The basal spot on the inner side of the petal of 'HORCOGJIL' is medium yellow while it is lighter medium yellow on the petal of 'Horcoherent'.

FLOWER: double type, average of 66 petals per flower, medium to dense petals, orange blend colour group, yellow centre, round when viewed from above, upper part is convex when viewed from the side, lower part is concave when viewed from the side, no reflexing of petals one-by-one, strong fragrance
PETAL: obovate, one colour on inner side, lighter towards apex, light red pink (RHS 38A-B) with yellow orange to light yellow orange (RHS 19A-B) tones on inner side, absent or very weak incisions along margin, medium reflexing of margin, medium degree of undulation of margin

Origin & Breeding History: 'HORCOGJIL' originated from a controlled cross made between the female parent, an unnamed seedling derived from the cross 'Laura Ford' x 'Goldbusch', and the male parent 'Horjilly', in June 2000 in Stansted, Essex, United Kingdom. It was bred and developed by the breeder Heather Horner. From the resulting progeny, 'HORCOGJIL' was selected in July 2001 based on its plant growth habit, good fragrance, apricot-orange flower colour and strong disease resistance. 'HORCOGJIL' was first propagated through grafting and softwood cuttings in July 2001 in Stansted, Essex, United Kingdom.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'HORCOGJIL' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring and summer of 2016 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included a total of 12 plants each of the candidate variety and reference variety. All plants were grown from 10 cm liners and transplanted into 7.5 litre containers on July 16, 2015. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety on May 16, 2016. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
