Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Chewperadventure' (Oso Easy Mango Salsa)

Summary: During the second flush, the plants of 'FARROWRSP' are taller than those of 'Chewperadventure'. The leaf of 'FARROWRSP' is larger than that of 'Chewperadventure'. The flower bud of 'FARROWRSP' is dark red while that of 'Chewperadventure' is red pink. The colour group of the flower for 'FARROWRSP' is an orange blend while it is a pink blend for that of 'Chewperadventure'. The flower of 'FARROWRSP' has fewer petals than the flower of 'Chewperadventure'. The profile of the lower part of the flower of 'FARROWRSP' is convex while that of 'Chewperadventure' is concave to flat. The inner side of the petal of 'FARROWRSP' is mainly red pink with light orange towards the base while that of 'Chewperadventure' is lighter red pink fading to light pink with age. The basal spot on the inner side of the petal of 'FARROWRSP' is medium yellow while it is white for that of 'Chewperadventure'.

FLOWER BUD: elliptic to medium ovate shape, outer side dark red (closest to RHS 42A)
FLOWER: single to semi-double type, orange blend colour group, yellow centre, loose density of petals, irregularly rounded shape, flat to concave profile of upper part, convex profile of lower part, medium fragrance, weak sepal extensions
PETAL: no reflexing of petals one-by-one, obovate shape, absent or very weak incisions, absent or very weak reflexing of margin, absent or very weak to weak undulation
PETAL (INNER SIDE): main colour red pink (RHS 47C) with light orange (RHS 28D) towards base
PETAL (OUTER SIDE): red pink (closest to RHS 52A)
BASAL PETAL SPOT (INNER SIDE): small, medium yellow (RHS 12A-B)

Origin & Breeding History: The variety 'FARROWRSP' was discovered in 2010 as a mutation of the parent variety 'ChewMayTime' at Holly Hill Farms in Earleville, Maryland, USA. 'FARROWRSP' was selected in 2010 based on its flower colour, disease resistance, compact growth habit and ease of repotting. Asexual reproduction of 'FARROWRSP' was first conducted by softwood cuttings in 2010 in Earleville, Maryland, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'FARROWRSP' was conducted outdoors during the summer of 2023 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from bare-rooted cuttings and transplanted into 13.6 litre containers in the summer of 2022. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on July 26, 2023. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
