Variety used for comparison: 'Day Breaker'

Summary: The newly opened leaf of ‘VLR17004' has a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas that of ‘Day Breaker' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The upper side of the leaf of ‘VLR17004' has a medium degree of glossiness whereas that of ‘Day Breaker' has a very strong degree of glossiness. The sepal extensions of ‘VLR17004' are weak whereas those of ‘Day Breaker' are strong. The petals of ‘VLR17004' are rounded with an absent or very weak reflexing of the margin whereas those of ‘Day Breaker' are transverse elliptic with a medium degree of reflexing of the margin. The inner side of the petals of ‘VLR17004' have light yellow at the base whereas those of ‘Day Breaker' have yellow orange at the base.

Origin & Breeding History: 'VLR17004' originated from a hybrid cross made in Vineland, Ontario in 2017 between the female proprietary parent designated V90 and male proprietary parent designated V109. The results of the cross were planted in the rose hybrid block at Vineland Research and Innovation Centre during the summer of 2018. In 2020, the seedling designated ‘VLR17004' was evaluated and selected based on plant height, plant growth habit, number of petals, cold hardiness and disease resistance. Asexual propagation by cuttings was initiated in the fall of 2020.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for ‘VLR17004' was conducted outdoors during the summer of 2025 at the Vineland Research and Innovations Centre Inc. located in Vineland Station, Ontario. The trial included 6 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. Two year old plants of both varieties were grown in 11 litre containers connected to a drip irrigation system. Observations and measurements were taken from 6 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety in September 2025. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's T-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
