Origin & Breeding History: 'Gandini Santiago' originated as a chance seedling discovered by Francesco Gandini and developed by the breeder Marinus Adrianus Cornelis van Aart in Girona, Spain in August 2002. The new variety 'Gandini Santiago' was discovered in a nursery bed planted with seeds of unnamed Hibiscus syriacus plants and was selected based on plant growth habit, flower colour, flowering time and flower sterility. Asexual propagation by softwood cuttings was first conducted in September 2009, in Oudenbosch, Netherlands.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of 'Gandini Santiago' is based on the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number 2011/2898, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trial was conducted by the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge, United Kingdom in 2013. Colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
