Summary: The plants of 'THEISSHSSTL' are shorter than those of 'American Irene Scott'. The plants of 'THEISSHSSTL' have a medium density of branching whereas those of 'America Irene Scott' have dense branching. The base of the leaf blade of 'THEISSHSSTL' is obtuse while that of 'America Irene Scott' is acute. The leaf blade of 'THEISSHSSTL' has an absent or weak degree of undulation of the margin whereas that of 'America Irene Scott' has a moderate degree of undulation of the margin. The inner side of the petal of 'THEISSHSSTL' is light violet while that of 'America Irene Scott' is light blue pink. The petal of 'THEISSHSSTL' has a medium degree of incisions whereas that of 'America Irene Scott' has an absent or weak degree of incisions.

OUTERMOST PETALS: horizontal attitude
PETAL: moderately elongated shape, inner side light violet (RHS 76A), no secondary colour, medium degree of incisions of margin, weak to medium degree of undulation of margin
EYE ZONE: small relative to petals, absent or very short to short extensions, dark purple red (RHS 53A and RHS 60B)
Origin & Breeding History: 'THEISSHSSTL' was discovered as a naturally occurring branch mutation of an un-named Hibiscus syriacus variety in May 2008 in Humble, Texas, USA. 'THEISSHSSTL' was selected based on plant growth habit, leaf variegation, as well as flower type, colour and sterility. Asexual reproduction of 'THEISSHSSTL' was first conducted by softwood stem cuttings in September 2008 in Humble, Texas, USA.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'THEISSHSSTL' was conducted in an outdoor irrigated container trial during the spring and summer of 2023 in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 10 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from 5.7 cm liners, transplanted into 7.6-liter containers in summer 2021 and overwintered in an un-heated polyhouse. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants each of the candidate and reference variety on August 16, 2023. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test. All colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
