Summary: 'Black Beauty' produces a smaller plant with smaller leaves than 'Green Wizard'. The shape of the base of the leaf blade in 'Black Beauty' is attenuate to obtuse while it is cordate in 'Green Wizard'. 'Black Beauty' has a leaf blade margin that is unlobed and dentate while 'Green Wizard' has lobed leaves that are dentate. The petiole of 'Black Beauty' has very weak anthocyanin colouration while in 'Green Wizard' there is none. 'Black Beauty' has a shorter peduncle than 'Green Wizard'. The capitulum length is shorter in 'Black Beauty' than in 'Green Wizard'.
Description:
'Black Beauty' is a perennial that has a upright bushy growth habit, with a sparse degree of branching. It is propagated vegetatively. The stem is medium green in colour with very weak anthocyanin colouration. The stem has no glaucosity or pubescence. The leaf is a simple type arranged alternately and at the base in a rosette arrangement. The leaf is ovate in shape with an acute shaped apex, and an attenuate to obtuse shaped base. The leaf blade margin is unlobed and dentate. The upper side of the leaf is dark green in colour with no variegation, and very sparse pubescence. There is a petiole present that has very weak anthocyanin colouration. The peduncle has no anthocyanin colouration.
'Black Beauty' flowers once early to mid season for a moderate amount of time. The inflorescence head is found terminally with an erect attitude. There is a disc present and the floret is black in colour.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Black Beauty' was selected from a population of seedlings that were the result of open pollination between unnamed Rudbeckia occidentalis seedlings. The discovery was made by the breeder in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands in 1994. The selection criteria were improved floral traits, and good form and habit.
Tests & Trials: Were conducted for 'Black Beauty' during the summer of 2002, at Oxford Station, Ontario. Trials consisted of ten plants of each variety grown in field plots spaced approximately 0.4 metres within the row and 1.0 metre between the rows. Measured characteristics were based on ten measurements unless indicated otherwise.
