Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'KWS Daniello', 'KWS Propower' and 'KWS Trebiano'
Summary: The first leaf blade of 'KWS Serafino' is longer and narrower than those of 'KWS Daniello' and KWS Propower'. The pubescence on the upper surface of the first leaf of 'KWS Serafino' is medium to dense whereas it is sparse for 'KWS Propower' and of a sparse to medium density for 'KWS Daniello'. The upper third of the flag leaf sheath of 'KWS Serafino' has a medium degree of glaucosity whereas that of 'KWS Trebiano' has a strong degree of glaucosity. Below the spike, the pubescence on the stem of 'KWS Serafino' is absent or very sparse to sparse whereas the pubescence is medium to dense on the stem of the reference varieties. At maturity, the plants of 'KWS Serafino' are taller than the plants of 'KWS Daniello' and shorter than those of 'KWS Propower' and 'KWS Trebiano'. The stem between the upper node and spike is shorter for 'KWS Serafino' than those of the reference varieties. 'KWS Serafino' has a longer spike than 'KWS Propower' and 'KWS Trebiano'. The kernel weight of 'KWS Serafino' is less than that of 'KWS Trebiano' and 'KWS Propower'.
Description:
PLANT: winter type, diploid, intermediate to semi-prostrate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium tillering capacity, heads emerge mid-season
COLEOPTILE: medium to long, medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FIRST LEAF: medium length sheath, medium to dense pubescence of upper surface
STEM: absent or very sparse to sparse pubescence below spike, anthocyanin colouration present in uppermost node at maturity, thin pith in cross-section
FOLIAGE: medium green
FLAG LEAF: twisted attitude, medium degree of glaucosity on upper third of sheath during inflorescence emergence, anthocyanin colouration of auricles present
SPIKE: medium degree of glaucosity during milk development, fusiform, dense to very dense, horizontal to semi-curved attitude at maturity
LEMMA AWNS: present, absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, barbed margin
KERNEL: medium length, dark aleurone layer, elliptical
AGRONOMIC TRAIT: good lodging resistance, good winter survival
Origin & Breeding History: 'KWS Serafino' (experimental designations KWS-H161 and RT239) originated from a 4-way cross conducted in Forli, Italy in 2014. The first cross between lines Lo1018-P and Lo1015-N resulted in the cytoplasmic male sterile female inbred line and the second cross resulted in the restorer synthetic line LSR130. The resulting hybrid variety was designated as 'KWS Serafino' and tested in official trials in Germany, Poland and Denmark between 2015 and 2017. Certified seed was first produced in Munster-Kreutzen, Germany in 2017. The selection criteria included standability, disease resistance, yield and thousand kernel weight.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KWS Serafino' was conducted in Avonlea, Saskatchewan in 2022. The field trial was sown in the previous fall season and arranged in a RCB design with 4 replicates per variety. Each plot measured 9 square metres and consisted of 6 rows, each row 6 metres long with a row spacing of 25 cm. The seeding density was approximately 200 plants per square metre, resulting in a minimum of 7200 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on a 60 measurements per variety, except for the kernel weight, which was based on 12 measurements per variety. Additional testing was conducted in a controlled environment to observe the coleoptile and first leaf characteristics. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values. Results were supported by the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number RR 10807, purchased from the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing in Slupia Wielka, Poland. The trials were conducted by the Research Centre for Cultivar Testing in both Slupi Wielkiej and Zybiszowie, Poland from 2014 to 2016.
