Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'KWS Daniello', 'KWS Serafino' and 'KWS Trebiano'

Summary: The first leaf blade of 'KWS Propower' is shorter than those of the reference varieties and it is wider than that of 'KWS Serafino' and 'KWS Trebiano'. The pubescence on the upper surface of the first leaf of 'KWS Propower' is sparse whereas it is medium to dense on those of 'KWS Serafino' and 'KWS Trebiano'. Below the spike, the pubescence on the stem of 'KWS Propower' is medium to dense whereas it is absent or very sparse to sparse on the stem of 'KWS Serafino'. At maturity, the plants of 'KWS Propower' are taller than the plants of 'KWS Daniello' and 'KWS Serafino'. The stem between the upper node and spike for 'KWS Propower' is shorter than that of 'KWS Daniello' and longer than that of 'KWS Serafino'. 'KWS Propower' has a shorter spike than 'KWS Daniello' and 'KWS Serafino'. The kernel weight of 'KWS Propower' is greater than that of 'KWS Daniello' and 'KWS Serafino'.

Description:

PLANT: winter type, diploid, intermediate to semi-prostrate growth habit at 5 to 9 tiller stage, medium tillering capacity, heads emerge mid-season

COLEOPTILE: medium length, weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration
FIRST LEAF: medium length sheath, sparse pubescence of upper surface

STEM: medium to dense pubescence below spike, anthocyanin colouration present in uppermost node at maturity, thin pith in cross-section

FOLIAGE: medium green
FLAG LEAF: twisted attitude, medium to strong degree of glaucosity on upper third of sheath during inflorescence emergence, anthocyanin colouration of auricles present

SPIKE: weak to medium degree of glaucosity during milk development, fusiform, dense to very dense, horizontal attitude at maturity
LEMMA AWNS: present, absent or very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration, barbed margin

KERNEL: medium length, dark aleurone layer, elliptical

AGRONOMIC TRAIT: good lodging resistance, good winter survival

Origin & Breeding History: 'KWS Propower' (experimental designation KWS-H155) originated from a 4-way cross conducted in Monselice, Italy in 2014. The first cross between the lines Lo1018-P and Lo1017-N resulted in the cytoplasmic male sterile female inbred line and the second cross resulted in the restorer synthetic line LSR126. The resulting hybrid variety was designated as 'KWS Propower' and tested in official trials in Germany between 2014 and 2016. Certified seed was first produced in Köstorf, Germany in 2017. The selection criteria included standability, disease resistance, yield and thousand kernel weight.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'KWS Propower' was conducted in Avonlea, Saskatchewan in 2022. The field trial was sown in the previous fall season and arranged in a RCB design with 4 replicates per variety. Each plot measured 9 square metres and consisted of 6 rows, each row 6 metres long with a row spacing of 25 cm. The seeding density was approximately 200 plants per square metre, resulting in a minimum of 7200 plants per variety per year. The measured characteristics were based on 60 measurements per variety, except for the kernel weight, which was based on 12 measurements per variety. Additional testing was conducted in a controlled environment to observe the coleoptile and first leaf characteristics. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values. Results were supported by the UPOV report of Technical Examination, application number RW1516, purchased from the Bundessortenamt, Hannover, Germany. The trials were conducted by the Bundessortenamt in Nossen, Germany from 2014 to 2016.
