'Eveline' is a vegetatively propagated perennial hybrid salvia variety which has an upright bushy to bushy rounded growth habit with strong degree of branching. The moderately thick edged stem is medium green in colour with no anthocyanin or glaucosity but medium to dense pubescence.
The simple type leaves are arranged in an opposite fashion along the stem. The leaf is lanceolate in shape with an acute apex and cordate to truncate shaped base. The leaf has a crenate margin, medium pubescence on the upper and lower sides and no glaucosity on the upper side. The leaf is dark green in colour with no variegation. There is a petiole with no anthocyanin colouration.
'Eveline' flowers almost continously during the middle of the season for a moderate amount of time. The medium sized erect florets are borne both terminally and axillary in a whorled like fashion on the spike type inflorescence. The colour of the upper and lower lip of the floret is blue-pink.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Eveline' was discovered in Hummelo, The Netherlands in 2000 from seedlings produced by a cross between the female parent Salvia 'Amethyst' and the male parent Salvia 'Tanzerin' which occurred in 1999. The objectives of the breeding program was to create new hybrid Salvia cultivars with improved form/habit and floral traits. 'Eveline' was selected based on flower colour and compact plant form.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials were conducted in a polyhouse at Oxford Station, Ontario during the summer/fall 2005. 15 plants of each variety were individually grown in 15cm plastic pots with a pot spacing of 30cm.
