Variety used for comparison: 'Black and Blue'

Summary: The plants of 'BBSAL01301' are taller than the plants of 'Black and Blue'. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'BBSAL01301' is brown green whereas the upper side of the leaf blade of 'Black and Blue' is a lighter brown green. The calyx of 'BBSAL01301' is shorter than that of 'Black and Blue'. The outer side of the corolla tube of 'BBSAL01301' is violet blue whereas the outer side of the corolla tube of 'Black and Blue' is a darker violet blue.

Origin & Breeding History: 'BBSAL01301' was bred and developed by the breeder, Brent D. Barnes, in Bonsall, California, USA. 'BBSAL01301' originated from a controlled cross made in October 2016 between two proprietary varieties. The new variety 'BBSAL01301' was selected in August 2017 for its growth habit, branch strength, leaf colour, early flowering, flower colour, and garden performance. 'BBSAL01301' was first propagated asexually by vegetative tip cuttings in August 2017, in Bonsall, California, USA.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'BBSAL01301' was conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2020 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. Plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 15cm pots on April 20, 2020. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or 10 parts of plants, of each variety on June 10, 2020. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
