Summary: 'Santasol' is a Sanvitalia variety which produces plants with weaker stem anthocyanin colouration than 'Santis 99'. 'Santasol' has wider leaves that are a lighter green colour than 'Santis 99'. The peduncle of 'Santasol' is shorter, with less intense anthocyanin than the peduncle of 'Santis 99'. 'Santasol' has shorter ray florets than 'SVT1' and narrower ray florets than 'Santis 99'.
Description:
'Santasol' is a annual Sanvitalia variety which has a growth habit which is initially upright, but becoming arching to pendulous. Branching is moderate. The stems are smooth and moderately thin and are red-brown in colour, with moderately strong anthocyanin colouration. There is sparse pubescence on the stems. The leaves are simple and elliptic to ovate in shape. The leaf apex is acute and the base is obtuse. The margins are entire. Pubescence on the upper side of the leaf is sparse to medium and on the lower side it is very sparse. The leaves are medium green on the upper side and light green on the lower surface.
The peduncle of 'Santasol' has medium anthocyanin colouration and moderately strong pubescence. The bracts are ovate, with an acute apex and blunt tip.
'Santasol' starts to flower early in the season and flowers almost continuously. The variety produces a head type inflorescence which has an erect attitude. The ray florets are touching at the base and there are usually thirteen. The ray florets are oblong in shape, with an obtuse apex and entire margin. Recurvature of the tip is weak. There is no pubescence on the upper or lower side. The ray florets are bright yellow-orange on the upper side. The lower side is yellow with light green longitudinal streaks. A disc is present.
Origin & Breeding History: 'Santasol' originated from a seedling from a female plant Sanvitalia x hybrida identified as number A178. The male parent is unidentified because the seedling was a result of an uncontrolled open pollination. The cross which resulted in the variety 'Santasol' was made in 1999 in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands.
Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'Santasol' were conducted in a polyhouse during the summer of 2003 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial consisted of 15 plants per variety grown from unrooted cuttings, rooted May 30, 2003 (week 22) and transplanted into 11cm pots on July 8 (week 28). Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants of each variety in August 2003. All colour characteristics were determined using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) colour chart.
