Origin & Breeding History: 'Rocklet' originated from a red flowering seedling, designated as 'D702', selected from Saxifraga x arendsii 'Purperteppich' by the breeder, M. Gutter, an employee of Syngenta Seeds B.V. in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands. The selection was made through three cycles of halfsib selection conducted from April 2001 through to March 2003. A single seedling was selected in March 2003 based on early spring flowering, a strong compact growth habit, free flowering and non-fading scarlet-red flower colour. The variety 'Rocklet' has been reproduced by vegetative cuttings in Enkhuizen, The Netherlands since March 2003.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Rocklet' was conducted in a polyhouse during the spring of 2014 at BioFlora Inc. in St. Thomas, Ontario. The trial included 20 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown from rooted cuttings and transplanted into 12 cm pots on August 15, 2013. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants or parts of plants of each variety on March 30, 2014. All colour determinations were made using the 2007 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
