Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'Iceberg'

Summary: The plants of 'Lemonjade' are upright-bushy to bushy-rounded and wider than those of 'Iceberg', which are narrow upright to upright-bushy. The stem of 'Lemonjade' is purple with a medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration while that of 'Iceberg' is light green with an absent or very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The leaf blade of 'Lemonjade' is smaller than that of 'Iceberg'. The upper side of the leaf blade of 'Lemonjade' is brown green to light green whereas the leaf blade of 'Iceberg' is light green. In the fall, the upper side of the leaf blade of 'Lemonjade' has a very weak to weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration along the mid-rib and margin whereas the leaf blade of 'Iceberg' has no anthocyanin colouration. The petal of 'Lemonjade' is absent to very small, reduced in size to a raised ridge and yellowish white whereas the petal of 'Iceberg' is small and white.

LEAF BLADE (UPPER SIDE): absent or very sparse pubescence, weak glaucosity, brown green to light green (RHS 138B-C), very weak anthocyanin colouration along midrib and margin in fall
LEAF BLADE (LOWER SIDE): absent or very sparse pubescence

FLOWERING PERIOD: late in the season, medium to long
INFLORESCENCE: cyme type, terminal position only, erect attitude
FLOWER: petal arrangement is touching with a raised ridge, very few petals (almost apetalous)
PETAL: very small, less than 1mm long, upper and lower side is white (more yellow than RHS 155A)

Origin & Breeding History: 'Lemonjade' originated from a naturally occuring sport mutation at Walter Gardens, Inc. in Zeeland, Michigan, USA in August 2008. The plant from which the sport was taken resulted from a cross involving the variety 'Sheila McQueen' as the female parent, and an unknown male parent. 'Lemonjade' was initially selected as part of a breeding program to produce plants with a compact growth habit and very light yellow flowers and was further evaluated in the spring of 2010.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'Lemonjade' was conducted outdoors during the summer of 2015 at Variety Rights Management in Oxford Station, Ontario. The trial included a total of 15 plants each of the candidate and reference variety. All plants were grown in 22 cm pots spaced 45 cm apart. Observations and measurements were taken from 10 plants, or parts of plants, of each variety the week of September 7, 2015. All colour determinations were made using the 2001 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
