Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Micron' and 'Heron'

Summary: 'DH3604' is taller in plant height at maturity than 'Micron' and 'Heron'.'DH3604' matures later than 'Micron'.The mature pod colour of 'DH3604' is tan while it is brown for 'Heron'.'DH3604' has a shinier seed coat lustre than 'Micron' but duller than 'Heron'.The seed protein content of 'DH3604' is higher than 'Micron' and 'Heron'.'DH3604' has a lower percent oil content than 'Micron' and 'Heron'.

Description:

'DH3604' is a semi determinate natto type soybean variety. The hypocotyl and flowers are purple in colour. The leaf has three leaflets with a terminal leaflet that is lanceolate in shape. The plant pubescence is gray in colour. 'DH3604' has a tan mature pod colour. The seed is a moderately shiny yellow colour with a spherical flattened shape and a yellow coloured hilum. The abscisson layer of the hilum is normal.

Origin & Breeding History: 'X3604-B-B-11-5' originated from a cross of Nattawa/H-24//Nattosan/3/X2636-3-1-2 at the Eastern Cereal & Oilseeds Research Centre, Ottawa, Ontario with the final cross being made in 1991. X2636-3-1-2 was developed from X1429-20-B-B-1/ X947-B-B-B-55. X947-B-B-B-55 is a full sister of TNS, derived from the same F2 plant.H-24 was a late maturing small seeded line from the USA. X1429-20-B-B-1 was developed from the cross M62-173*2/T106, G. Soja//Acme/3/H-24. M62-173 was developed from the cross Renville/Capital(M387)// (M406) Harsoy/Norchief. The F2 population was grown in Ottawa in 1993.Mass selection and the bulk method was employed through the F3 generation for small, spherical seeds. In 1995, the F4 generation, single plants were selected for lodging resistance and adaptation. In 1996, the F5 generation, selected progeny rows were bulked for evaluation in following generations. X3604-B-B-11-5 was tested in Ottawa in 1997 and 1998. It was tested in 13 trials in Ontario and Quebec in 1999 and 2000.

Tests & Trials: Tests and trials for 'DH3604' were conducted at the Eastern Cereal & Oilseeds Research Centre, Ottawa, Ontario in 2003, 2004. Plots consisted of 4 rows that were 5 metres in length with a row spacing 40 cm. There were four reps arranged in a RCB design.
