Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: '90Y01' and 'Astro R2'
Summary: When 95% of the pods are ripe, the middle third of the main stem of 'P008T70R' has light tawny pubescence while that of 'Astro R2' has tawny pubescence. The plants of 'P008T70R' are shorter than those of 'Astro R2'. The lateral leaflet of 'P008T70R' is medium sized while that of '90Y01' is small. The pod is light to medium brown while that of 'Astro R2' is medium to dark brown. The seed shape of 'P008T70R' is spherical flattened whereas it is spherical for 'Astro R2'. The hilum colour for 'P008T70R' is imperfect yellow whereas it is black for 'Astro R2'. The plants of 'P008T70R' mature earlier than those of both reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'P008T70R' (experimental designation XB00R12) is the result of the cross between '90M01' and '90M92' conducted in 2005 in the summer in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. The modified single seed descent method and pedigree method were used to develop the variety. The F1-F2 generations were grown in Waimea, Hawaii and the F3 generation was grown in Moorhead, Minnesota. In 2006/2007, the F4 generation was grown in Viluco, Chile and were advanced based on yield for single plants and progeny rows. Single plant purification took place in 2009/2010 in Viluco, Chile. Wide area testing continued from 2010-2013 in the USA and Canada. Selection criteria included yield, maturity and resistance to Roundup branded herbicides and Phytophthora rot (Phytophthora sojae).
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'P008T70R' conducted in Alma, Ontario during the 2014 growing season was planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows 4 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot was sown with 275 seeds per replication. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 201200179, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, USA.
