Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: '900Y61' and 'PS0074R2'

Summary: There is no anthocyanin colouration on the hypocotyl of 'P001T34R' whereas it is present in '900Y61'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'P001T34R' are shorter than both reference varieties. The flowers of 'P001T34R' are white whereas those of '900Y61' are violet. The pod colour for 'P001T34R' is medium to dark brown whereas it is light to medium brown for 'PS0074R2'. The seed shape of 'P001T34R' is spherical whereas it is spherical flattened for '900Y61'. 'P001T34R' is earlier maturing than the reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'P001T34R' (experimental designations 'XB003B12' and 'PH12004') is the result of the cross between '90A01' and '90M02' conducted in 2007 in Moorhead, Minnesota, USA. The modified single seed descent method and pedigree method were used to develop the variety. The F1-F2 generations were grown in Salinas, Puerto Rico and the F3 generation was grown in Moorhead, Minnesota. The F4 generation grown in Viluco, Chili and the F5-F6 generations grown in Moorhead, Minnesota were advanced based on yield for single plants and progeny rows. Single plant purification took place in 2010 in Moorhead, Minnesota. Wide area testing continued from 2011-2012 in the USA and Canada. Selection criteria included yield, maturity and resistance to Roundup branded herbicides.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'P001T34R' conducted in Palmerston, Ontario during the 2013 growing season was planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows 4 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot was sown with 300 seeds per replication. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements whereas the seed weight was based on 3 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 201200174, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, USA.
