Origin & Breeding History: 'P28T08R' is the result of the cross between '93Y05' and 'YB28E09' conducted in 2008 in Salinas, Puerto Rico. The modified single seed descent method and pedigree method were used to develop the variety. The F1-F2 generations were grown in Salinas, Puerto Rico. The F3-F5 generations grown in Princeton, Illinois were advanced based on yield from single plant and progeny rows with single plant purification beginning in 2011. Wide area testing in the USA and Canada continued throughout 2012-2014. Selection criteria included yield, standability, tolerance to glyphosate herbicides and resistance to Phytophthora rot (Phytophthora megasperma f. sp. glycinea).
Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'P28T08R' was conducted near Wallaceburg, Ontario during the 2015 growing season. It was planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows 4 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. Each plot was sown with approximately 180 to 250 seeds per replication. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a paired Student's T-test. The Canadian trial results were supported by the official technical examination report 201500133, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, USA.
