Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'S07-M8'

Summary: The hairs on the middle third of the main stem of 'S10-R2' are grey whereas they are light tawny for 'S07-M8'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'S10-R2' are taller than those of 'S07-M8'. When 95% of the pods are ripe, 'S10-R2' has a light brown pod whereas it is medium brown for 'S07-M8'. At maturity, the 100 seed weight for 'S10-R2' is less than the 100 seed weight for 'S07-M8'.

Description:

HYPOCOTYL: medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

PLANT: oilseed type, indeterminate growth type, semi-erect branch attitude, grey pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures mid-season

LATERAL LEAFLET: pointed ovate

FLOWER: violet

POD: light brown
SEED: medium size, spherical, yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: yellow

Origin & Breeding History: 'S10-R2' (experimental designation AR1205108) originated from the cross 94441 and 73947 conducted in the winter of 2009/10 in a contra season nursery in Chile. The crossed material was derived by Single Seed descent technique until the F3 generation. Single F4 plants were selected for disease resistance in the summer of 2011 in Owatonna, Minnesota, United States and the resulting F5 evaluated in a single replication trial in the winter of 2011/2012. The F6 generation was further evaluated in multiple trial locations in Canada and the United States in the summer of 2012. Single F7 plants were selected in Chile in the winter of 2012/2013 for disease resistance and the F8 generation was evaluated in multiple location trials in Canada and the United States in 2013. The F9 generation was further evaluated and increased in 2014. Bulk increase of 'S10-R2' occurred at the F10 generation in the winter of 2014/2015.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'S10-R2' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at Syngenta Canada, Inc., in Arva Ontario. The trials consisted of two replicates per variety with 8 by 5 metre rows per replication. Measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of 20 plants of each variety per year except for the 100 seed weight with 10 samples taken per replicate for each variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
