Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Colt', 'Ekurana R2' and 'NSC Jaden RR2Y'

Summary: The hairs on the main stem of 'Hydra R2' are tawny whereas they are grey on 'Ekurana R2'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'Hydra R2' are shorter than those of 'Colt'. The seed of 'Hydra R2' is large whereas the seed is small for 'Colt' and 'NSC Jaden RR2Y' and it is medium sized for 'Ekurana R2'. The seed of 'Hydra R2' has an elongated flattened shape whereas it is spherical flattened in the reference varieties. The colour of the hilum of 'Hydra R2' is imperfect black whereas it is black on 'Ekurana R2'. The plants of 'Hydra R2' are earlier maturing than those of 'Ekurana R2'.

Description:

PLANT: oilseed type, indeterminate growth type, erect branch attitude, tawny pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures early to mid-season

HYPOCOTYL: very weak to medium intensity of anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: medium green colour, medium degree of blistering, pointed ovate lateral leaflet, small to medium sized lateral leaflet

FLOWER: violet

POD: light to medium intensity of brown colour
SEED: large, elongated flattened shape, yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: black, yellow funicle

Origin & Breeding History: 'Hydra R2' (experimental designation C4M13008 R2) is the result of a cross between proprietary selections conducted in 2008 by La Coop fédérée, in Rancagua, Chile. A modified single seed descent method was used to develop the variety. In 2010 to 2011, the F1-F4 generations were grown in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico. In 2012, plants from the F5 generation, grown in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, were selected based on a visual assessment of lodging resistance, the number of pods per plant, and early maturation. The selected line was compared with the other sister lines within the recombinant family, which were derived from single seed descent. From 2013 to 2018, 'Hydra R2' was tested in the public trials of the Réseau Grandes Cultures du Québec and the Ontario Oil and Protein Seed Crop Committee.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Hydra R2' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons in field site Techno 5 at La Coop fédérée, in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. Each trial consisted of 3 replications per variety distributed in a RCB design. Each replicate consisted of four 5 metre long rows spaced 0.38 metres apart. The seeding density was such that it resulted in a total of over 750 plants per variety for each trial. For each variety, the plant height was based on 20 measurements in 2016 and 30 measurements in 2017. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on LSD values.
