Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'OAC Drayton', 'OAC Durham' and 'OAC Lakeview'

Summary: The hypocotyl of 'OAC Eve' has no anthocyanin colouration whereas the intensity of anthocyanin colouration on the hypocotyl of 'OAC Lakeview' is strong and very strong on 'OAC Drayton'. The hairs on the main stem of 'OAC Eve' are tawny whereas they are grey on 'OAC Durham' and 'OAC Lakeview'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'OAC Eve' are taller than those of 'OAC Durham' and 'OAC Lakeview'. The flower colour of 'OAC Eve' is white whereas it is violet for 'OAC Drayton' and 'OAC Lakeview'. 'OAC Eve' has a dark brown pod whereas the pod is medium brown for 'OAC Durham' and light brown for 'OAC Lakeview'.

Description:

PLANT: oilseed type, indeterminate growth type, erect to semi-erect branch attitude, tawny pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures early to mid-season

HYPOCOTYL: anthocyanin colouration absent

LEAF: weak blistering, medium size terminal and lateral leaflets, ovoid terminal leaflet, pointed ovate lateral leaflet, dark green colour

FLOWER: white

POD: dark brown
SEED: medium size, spherical flattened, yellow ground colour of testa, medium glaucosity, opaque glossiness of testa
HILUM: imperfect yellow, funicle different colour from testa

Origin & Breeding History: 'OAC Eve' (experimental designation SeCan 11-140C) originated from the cross between 'CF0703' and 'OAC Prodigy' conducted in 2006 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. The crossed material was derived by Single Seed descent technique until the F4 generation when a single plant was selected for maturity and agronomic traits in 2007. Seed from this plant was harvested and maintained by pedigree selection until the F4:7 generation when 25 plants were selected for morphological uniformity in 2010. The line, designated as SeCan 11-140C, was tested in the 2800 Heat Unit Private Ontario Soybean Variety Trials in 2011 and 2012 and in the 2600 Heat Unit Public Ontario Soybean Variety Trials in 2013.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'OAC Eve' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Elora Research Station of the University of Guelph, in Elora, Ontario. The trial was arranged in a RCB design and consisted of four replicates per variety with four rows per replication. Plots were approximately 1.5 by 5 metres with a row spacing of 43 centimetres. Measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of 20 plants of each variety except for the 100 seed weight with 2 samples taken per replicate for each variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student t-test.
