Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'HDC Goshen', 'OAC Avatar' and 'OAC Calypso'

Summary: The hairs on the main stem of 'OAC Adare' are light tawny whereas they are grey on 'HDC Goshen' and tawny on 'OAC Avatar'. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'OAC Adare' are shorter than the plants of 'HDC Goshen'. The lateral leaflet of 'OAC Adare' has a triangular shape whereas it is pointed ovate for 'HDC Goshen' and 'OAC Avatar'. 'OAC Adare' has a dark brown pod whereas the pod is medium brown for 'HDC Goshen' and 'OAC Avatar'. The seed shape of 'OAC Adare' is elongated whereas it is spherical flattened for 'HDC Goshen' and 'OAC Avatar' and it is spherical for 'OAC Calypso'. The plants of 'OAC Adare' are earlier maturing than those of 'OAC Calypso'.

Description:

PLANT: oilseed type, indeterminate growth type, erect to semi-erect branch attitude, light tawny pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures mid-season

HYPOCOTYL: strong anthocyanin colouration

LEAF: weak blistering, medium sized terminal and lateral leaflets, triangular shaped terminal and lateral leaflets

FLOWER: violet

POD: dark brown
SEED: medium size, elongated, yellow ground colour of testa, medium glaucosity, opaque glossiness of testa
HILUM: imperfect yellow, funicle different colour from testa

Origin & Breeding History: 'OAC Adare' (experimental designation SeCan 12-82C) originated from the cross between 'Colby' and 'OAC Perth' conducted in 2007 at the University of Guelph in Guelph, Ontario. The crossed material was derived by Single Seed descent technique until the F4 generation when a single plant was selected for maturity and agronomic traits in 2008. Seed from this plant was harvested and maintained by pedigree selection until the F4:8 generation when 25 plants were selected for morphological uniformity in 2012. The line, designated as SeCan 12-82C, was tested in the 2800 Heat Unit Private Ontario Soybean Variety Trials in 2012 and the 2800 Heat Unit Public Ontario Soybean Variety Trials in 2013 and 2014.

Tests & Trials:
The comparative trials for 'OAC Adare' were conducted during the 2016 and 2017 growing seasons at the Woodstock Research Station, University of Guelph, in Woodstock, Ontario. The trial was arranged in a RCB design and consisted of four replicates per variety with four rows per replication. Plots were approximately 1.5 by 5 metres with a row spacing of 43 centimetres. Measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of 20 plants of each variety except for the 100 seed weight with 2 samples taken per replicate for each variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on paired Student t-test.
