Origin & Breeding History: 'P28T62R' (experimental designation XB28AB15R) is the result of the cross between proprietary selections conducted in 2009 near Salinas, Puerto Rico. The modified single seed descent method and pedigree method were used to develop the variety. The F1 and F2 generations were grown near Salinas, Puerto Rico followed by single F3 plant selections made near Viluco, Chile in 2010. In 2011, single F4 plant selections were made near Napoleon, Ohio, USA followed by a progeny row yield test near Viluco, Chile. In 2012, single plant purification took place in Napoleon, Ohio along with regional area yield tests. Individual plant rows were harvested and advanced near Viluco, Chile and then, bulked near Napoleon, Ohio and Salinas, Puerto Rico in 2013. Wide area testing continued from 2013-2014 in the USA and Canada. Selection criteria included yield, maturity and resistance to Roundup branded herbicides and to Phytophthora rot (Phytophthora megasperma f. sp. glycinea).

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for 'P28T62R', conducted in Chatham, Ontario, Canada during the 2016 growing season, was planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows 4.5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements whereas the seed weight was based on 3 measurements. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 201600106, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office, Beltsville, Maryland, USA.
