Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'AAC Malden' and 'OAC Ramsey'

Summary: When 95% of the pods are ripe, the plants of ‘AAC McRae' are taller than the plants of ‘OAC Ramsey'. At full maturity, the pod of ‘AAC McRae' is light brown whereas the pod of ‘AAC Malden' is dark brown.

Description:

HYPOCOTYL: anthocyanin colouration absent

PLANT: indeterminate growth type, grey pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures very late

LATERAL LEAFLET: pointed ovate

FLOWER: white

POD: light brown
SEED: spherical shape, yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: yellow

REACTION TO DISEASE: resistant to soybean cyst nematode

Origin & Breeding History: ‘AAC McRae' (experimental designations OX-181 and SN11-0055-5-1E ) originated from a cross conducted between ‘OX752' and X696-32-2' in 2001 and a subsequent cross conducted between the resulting progeny and ‘LD01-5907' in 2006. All breeding work was conducted at the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Harrow Research and Development Centre in Harrow, Ontario. The new variety ‘AAC McRae' was selected through pedigree selection in 2014, in Harrow, Ontario, based on yield, maturity, lodging resistance, plant height, seed size, and percent protein, oil, and sugar in the seed. Further agronomic performance was evaluated from 2015 to 2018 in multiple locations in Ontario. Breeder seed production commenced in 2019.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'AAC MacRae' were conducted in Harrow, Ontario during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 5 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 2.5 metres in length and a row spacing of 61 cm. The trial consisted of approximately 1800 plants per variety. Plant height measurements were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
