Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: 'P15A09X'

Summary: When 95% of the pods are ripe, the plants of '5PZQJ47' are shorter than those of 'P15A09X'. At maturity, the hilum on the seed of '5PZQJ47' is imperfect black whereas it is medium brown for 'P15A09X'.

Description:

HYPOCOTYL: anthocyanin colouration present

PLANT: indeterminate growth type, grey pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering mid-season, matures mid- to late season

LEAF: pointed ovate lateral leaflet

FLOWER: violet

SEED: yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: imperfect black

Origin & Breeding History: '5PZQJ47' originated from a cross between the varieties 'XB24N13' and 'MONRR2YDT1.2' conducted in 2014 in Salinas, Puerto Rico using the pedigree method of plant breeding. From 2014 to 2016, eight generations were advanced between Woodstock, Ontario and Salinas, Puerto Rico. The F1 line was harvested in bulk, followed by modified single seed descent selection and multiple single plant selections. Line purification rows were selected and harvested in bulk in 2016. Selection criteria included yield, maturity, herbicide tolerance and pest resistance. '5PZQJ47' was selected at the F8 generation. Breeder seed production commenced in 2016.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for '5PZQJ47' conducted in Thamesford, Ontario during the 2021 and 2022 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trial consisted of 600 plants per variety. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
