Summary: At maturity, the hilum on the seed of '5PAYW06' is yellow whereas it is medium brown for 'P15A09X'.

Description:

HYPOCOTYL: strong anthocyanin colouration

PLANT: indeterminate growth type, grey pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering mid to late season, matures early season

LEAF: pointed ovate lateral leaflet

FLOWER: violet

POD: medium brown
SEED: yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: yellow

Origin & Breeding History: '5PAYW06' (experimental designation 5015BR05-01) originated from a cross between the varieties '5PBBG02' and 'XB33F13', conducted in 2014 in Waimea, Kuai, Hawaii using the pedigree method of plant breeding. From 2014 to 2017, eight generations were advanced between Waimea, Hawaii and Redwood Falls, Minnesota. The F1 line was harvested in bulk, followed by single seed descent selection and multiple single plant selections. Line purification rows were selected and harvested in bulk in 2017. Selection criteria included yield, maturity, herbicide tolerance and pest resistance.‘5PAYW06' was selected at the F8 generation. Breeder seed production commenced in 2018.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trial for '5PAYW06' conducted in Thamesford, Ontario during the 2021 growing season was planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trial consisted of 600 plants per variety. Results were supported by the official technical examination report 202200013, purchased from the Plant Variety Protection Office in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
