Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'OAC Strive' and 'OAC Kamran'
Summary: The plants of 'OAC Ambrose' are taller than those of 'OAC Kamran'. The hair on the middle third of the main stem of 'OAC Ambrose' is grey whereas that of 'OAC Strive' and 'OAC Kamran' is tawny. The terminal and lateral leaflet of 'OAC Ambrose' is smaller than that of 'OAC Strive'. The pod of 'OAC Ambrose' is very light brown whereas that of 'OAC Strive' is medium dark brown. The seed weight of 'OAC Ambrose' is lesser than that of 'OAC Strive'. The plants of 'OAC Ambrose' begin flowering earlier than those of 'OAC Kamran'. The plants of 'OAC Ambrose' mature later than those of 'OAC Strive'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'OAC Ambrose' originated from the cross between 'OAC Nation' and 'S05-T6' made in 2013 at the University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario. Seed from the cross was advanced by single seed decent to the F4 generation. A single seed was selected from the F4 generation based on maturity and agronomic traits including yield potential, lodging resistance, and seed characteristics. In 2020, F4:10 Breeder seed was produced and designated 'SeCan 18-69C'.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'OAC Ambrose' were conducted during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons in St. Thomas, Ontario. The 2022 plots consisted of 3 rows per variety with a row spacing of 38 centimetres and a row length of 15 metres. The 2023 plots consisted of 3 rows per variety with a row spacing of 38 centimetres and a row length of 23 metres in length. Both 2022 and 2023 trials were arranged in a 3 replicate RCB design. Measurements were taken from 20 plants or parts of 20 plants of each variety per year, except for seed weight which was taken as 5 and 3 replicates of 100 grams of seed per each variety in 2022 and 2023, respectively. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
