Both parents designated as individual BC3F1 plants were derived from an initial cross between the varieties 'P32T16R' and '5PHQF75' conducted in 2018 in Johnston, Iowa using the pedigree method of plant breeding. From 2018 to 2020, six generations were advanced between Johnston, Iowa and Salinas, Puerto Rico. The F1 line was harvested in bulk, followed by single seed descent selection and multiple single plant selections. Line purification rows were selected and harvested in bulk in 2020. Selection criteria included yield, maturity, seed quality traits, herbicide tolerance and pest resistance. '5PEYG01' was selected at the F6 generation. Breeder seed production commenced in 2020.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for '5PEYG01' were conducted in Chatham, Ontario during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trial consisted of 600 plants per variety.
