Origin & Breeding History: '5PNMK70' originated from a cross between the varieties 'P06A13R' and '5PHQF75' conducted in 2017 in Johnston, Iowa using the backcrossing method of plant breeding. From 2018 to 2020, seven generations were advanced between Johnston, Iowa, Algona, Iowa and Salinas, Puerto Rico. The F1 line was planted and backcrossed to 'P06A13R', followed by three additional backcross generations. The BC4F1 line was planted and harvested in bulk followed by multiple single plant selections. Line purification rows were selected and harvested in bulk in 2020. Selection criteria included yield, seed quality traits, maturity, herbicide tolerance and pest resistance. '5PNMK70' was selected at the F7 generation. Breeder seed production commenced in 2020.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for '5PNMK70' were conducted in Fergus, Ontario during the 2022 and 2023 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trial consisted of 600 plants per variety. For each variety, the plant height was based on 30 measurements. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
