Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Dario R2X' and 'P005A27X'

Summary: When the cotyledons are completely open, the anthocyanin colouration on the hypocotyl of 'Piranha R2X' is of a weak to medium intensity whereas it is strong for ‘Dario R2X' and ‘P005A27X'. The plants of 'Piranha R2' begin flowering mid-season while the plants of ‘Dario R2X' begin flowering very early to early in the season. When 50% of the pods are ripe, the hairs on the middle third of the stem of 'Piranha R2X' are light tawny whereas they are tawny for ‘Dario R2X'. When 95% of the pods are ripe, the intensity of brown colour on the pod of ‘Piranha R2X' is medium to dark whereas it is light on the pod of the reference varieties. The plants of 'Piranha R2X' are taller than the plants of ‘P005A27X'. At maturity, the shape of the seed of 'Piranha R2X' is spherical whereas the seed shape is spherical flattened for ‘P005A27X' and elongated flattened for that of 'Dario R2X'. The plants of ‘Piranha R2X' mature later than the plants of the reference varieties.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Piranha R2X' (experimental designations C4M22474 XT and D1905-7) originated from a cross conducted between ‘CS084.004.20.02' and ‘AG2002-T3BAH' in 2012 in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada. The modified single seed descent method was used to develop the variety. In 2013, F1-F4 generations were grown in Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico and further advanced. In 2015, the F5 generation was grown in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec and individual plants were selected based on a visual assessment of maturity, lodging resistance and yield. From 2015 to 2021, ‘Piranha R2X' was tested in replicated field trials. Breeder seed was established at the F10 generation in 2022 in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘Piranha R2X' were conducted at the crop production research farm of Sollio Agriculture in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. The trials were planted in an RCB design with 4 replicates per variety. Each 5 square metre plot consisted of 3 rows, each 4.5 metres long, with a row spacing of 0.38 metres. The seeding density resulted in a total of 40 plants per variety per square metre for a total of 800 plants per variety per year. For each variety, 20 measurements were taken to determine plant height. Mean differences are significant at the 5% probability level based on a Tukey test.
