Variety Description

Variety used for comparison: ‘P24A80X'

Summary: When the cotyledons are completely open, the hypocotyl of ‘P24A07E' has a weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the hypocotyl of ‘P24A80X' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The plants of ‘P24A07E' are taller than the plants of ‘P24A80X'. When 95% of the pods are ripe, the pod of ‘P24A07E' is light brown, whereas that of ‘P24A80X' is medium brown. The seed of ‘P24A80X' has a medium brown hilum, whereas the seed of ‘P24A80X' has a black hilum. The plants of ‘P24A07E' mature earlier than the plants of ‘P24A80X'.

Origin & Breeding History: ‘P24A07E' originated from a cross between two proprietary inbreds, conducted in 2018 at Johnston, Iowa. Between 2019 and 2021, six generations were advanced across three locations: Johnston, Iowa; Princeton, Illinois; and Salinas, Puerto Rico. Selection criteria included yield, maturity, resistance to diseases and pests, and seed protein and oil content. ‘P24A07E' was selected at the F6 generation, and breeder seed production began in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for ‘P24A07E' were conducted in Kent County, Ontario, during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trial consisted of 1740 plants per variety. Plant height was measured using 20 observations per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
