Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Konatto' and 'Quenatto'

When 50% of the flowers are open, the branch attitude of 'Alynatto' is semi-erect whereas it is erect to semi-erect for 'Quenatto'. The lateral leaflets of 'Alynatto' are pointed ovate whereas they are triangular for 'Konatto'. The flower of 'Alynatto' is white whereas that of the reference varieties is violet. When 95% of the pods are ripe, the intensity of brown colour of the pod of 'Alynatto' is medium whereas it is light for 'Konatto'. The plants of 'Alynatto' are taller than those of the reference varieties. The plants of 'Alynatto' mature later than the plants of 'Konatto'.

Origin & Breeding History: 'Alynatto' (experimental designations SVX21N0S8, HS11-455-4/1/1/1/30N) originated from a cross between the varieties 'DH710' and 'HS06-50/1/1/142nattoc' conducted in 2011 in Inkerman, Ontario, using the modified individual pedigree selection method of plant breeding. From 2011 to 2014, five generations were advanced by single plant selection, line selection and yield testing. Selection criteria included yield, seed quality traits, maturity and lodging resistance. 'Alynatto' was selected at the F5 generation. Breeder seed was produced from F8 lines in 2020.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Alynatto' were conducted in Saint-Césaire, Québec during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 2 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trials consisted of 350 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% confidence probability level based on a paired Student's t-test.
