Variety Description

Varieties used for comparison: 'Aya' and 'Ikeda'

Summary: When 50% of the flowers are open, the branch attitude of 'Verdo' is erect to semi-erect whereas it is semi-erect for both the reference varieties. When 95% of the pods are ripe, the plants of 'Verdo' are taller than the plants of 'Aya'. The intensity of brown colour of the pod of 'Verdo' is medium whereas it is light for 'Aya'. At maturity, the one hundred seed weight for 'Verdo' is less than that of the reference varieties. The seed of 'Verdo' is spherical whereas that of the reference varieties is spherical flattened. The plants of 'Verdo' mature earlier than the plants of 'Ikeda'.

Description:

HYPOCOTYL: anthocyanin colouration present

Origin & Breeding History: 'Verdo' (experimental designations SVX22T0S37, SC11-80B.12) originated from a cross between the varieties 'S07-D2' and 'Eider' conducted in 2011 in Saint-Urbain, Québec, using the modified individual pedigree selection method of plant breeding. From 2012 to 2014, three generations were advanced in Saint-Urbain, Québec with no selection. In 2015, single plants were selected at the F4 generation based on maturity, yield, seed quality traits, lodging resistance and disease resistance. 'Verdo' was selected in 2016 at the F5 generation. Breeder seed was produced from F11 lines in 2022.

Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'Verdo' were conducted in Saint-Césaire, Québec during the 2023 and 2024 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 2 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 2 rows, 5 metres in length and a row spacing of 76 cm. The trials consisted of 350 plants per variety. Measured characteristics were based on 20 measurements per variety per year except for seed weights which were based on 10 measurements per variety per year. Mean differences were significant at the 5% probability level based on a Student's t-test.
