Description:
HYPOCOTYL: very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
PLANT: indeterminate growth type, light tawny pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures early
LEAF: rounded ovate lateral leaflets, medium green
FLOWER: violet
POD: medium brown
SEED: spherical, yellow ground colour of testa
HILUM: dark brown
Origin & Breeding History: P09Z79E' originated from a cross between the variety '5PPTW67' and an unnamed experimental line conducted in 2019 in Johnston, Iowa, USA. From 2019 to 2022, seven generations were advanced. The F1 line was planted and backcrossed with the mother line for 3 generations. The BC3F1 line was planted and harvested in bulk. Line purification rows were selected and harvested in bulk in 2022. Selection criteria included yield, maturity, herbicide tolerance and pest resistance. 'P09Z79E' was selected at the F7 generation. Breeder seed production commenced in 2022.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'P09Z79E' were conducted in Fergus, Ontario during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, each 5.3 metres in length, with a row spacing of 76 cm. The trials consisted of 1740 plants per variety.
