Variety Description
Variety used for comparison: 'P21A28X'
Summary: When cotyledons are completely unfolded, the hypocotyl of ‘P21Z88E' has a very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration whereas the hypocotyl of ‘P21A28X' has a strong intensity of anthocyanin colouration. The seed shape of 'P21Z88E' is spherical whereas it is elongated for 'P21A28X'. At maturity, the hilum of the seed of 'P21Z88E' is dark brown whereas it is black for 'P21A28X'.

HYPOCOTYL: very weak intensity of anthocyanin colouration
PLANT: indeterminate growth type, tawny pubescence on middle third of main stem, begins flowering and matures mid to late season
LEAF: rounded ovate lateral leaflets, medium green

Origin & Breeding History: ‘P21Z88E' originated from a cross between the variety '5PRVD58' and an unnamed experimental line conducted in 2020 in Johnston, Iowa, USA. From 2020 to 2021, seven generations were advanced. The F1 line was planted and backcrossed with the mother line for 3 generations. The BC3F1 line was planted and harvested in bulk. Line purification rows were selected and harvested in bulk in 2021. Selection criteria included yield, maturity, herbicide tolerance and pest resistance. 'P21Z88E' was selected at the F7 generation. Breeder seed production commenced in 2022.
Tests & Trials: The comparative trials for 'P21Z88E' were conducted in Chatham, Ontario during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons. Trials were planted in a RCB design and consisted of 3 replicates for each variety. Plots consisted of 4 rows, each 5.3 metres in length, with a row spacing of 76 cm. The trials consisted of 1740 plants per variety.
