Variety Description
Varieties used for comparison: 'Walbuma' and 'Sparkling Carpet'
Summary: The leaf length to width ratio of ‘MINSPIL04' is medium whereas it is low for both reference varieties. The main colour of the upper side of the expanding leaf of ‘MINSPIL04' is a darker brown red than that of ‘Sparkling Carpet'. The diameter of the inflorescence is small for ‘MINSPIL04' whereas it is medium sized for ‘Walbuma'.
Description:
PLANT: semi-upright growth habit, short, medium density
EXPANDING LEAF (UPPER SIDE): brown red (RHS 178C)
LEAF: light green (RHS 144B) upper side, short to medium length, narrow elliptic, medium length to width ratio, widest point towards basal quarter, acute apex, medium number of indentations of margin, shallow to medium depth indentations of margin
INFLORESCENCE: small diameter, sparse, one clearly distinct colour, medium pink, positioned at tip of stem only
FLOWER: small to medium diameter
PETAL: purple red (RHS 63A) on inner side, medium degree of colour change with age
FILAMENT: short, pale pink
OVARY: pink
Origin & Breeding History: ‘MINSPIL04' originated from an open pollinated cross between the female parent, a proprietary seedling designated ‘1429', and pollen from an unknown male parent in La Ménitré, France in 2010. From the resulting progeny, a single plant was selected in July 2012 based on flower type and foliage colour. The variety has been propagated since that time through softwood cuttings.
Tests & Trials: The detailed description of ‘MINSPIL04' is based on the UPOV report on Technical Examination application number 20172753, purchased from the Community Plant Variety Office in Angers, France. The trials were conducted by the Groupe d'Etude et de contrôle des Variétés Et des Semences (GEVES) in Cavaillon, France in 2019 and 2020. The colour determinations were made using the 2015 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Colour Chart.
